Comprehensive Eye Exams

Blurry vision is not the only reason to seek an examination with an eye care doctor. Good eye health is an important component of good overall health, although specialized eye care tailored to each individual will also ensure the best vision for a lifetime.

An eye exam is simple. The initial examination includes gathering your family history, past medical history, and a list of your current medications.  The history and medication list guide the eye doctor’s assessment for specific eye problems or diseases that could develop.

Eye exams should be performed every year and begin in childhood. Poor vision can affect a child’s performance in school, sports, and other activities. In this technological age, screen time can affect vision tremendously, making regular eye exams even more important.

Children are more prone to problems with myopia (nearsightedness), and it is becoming more prevalent at earlier ages. Myopia typically worsens over time and can lead to more serious conditions later in life, such as cataracts, glaucoma, or retinal detachment.

Most patients are amazed to find that an eye doctor is sometimes instrumental in diagnosing serious health conditions. Changes in the eyes can point to problems with diabetes, hypertension, and sometimes even cancer. If any questions arise, the doctor will refer you to your primary care physician for follow-up.
